On a perfect October evening in Raleigh, Artikal Sound System and Mouse Powell delivered an unforgettable night of Reggae Rock at Bowstring. Mouse Powell, hailing from Arizona and mentored by Katastro, kicked things off with his unique hip-hop-infused sound, dropping tracks like “Back against the wall,” “The score,” and an exclusive new song, “Don’t trip.” The energy was electric, setting the stage for the main event.

Continue readingLacing up the 2017 running season
After three half marathons in the spring (Wilmington, Raleigh, OBX) and my first two Sprint Triathlons in the summer, I was excited for the fall race season this November and December. After miles of training in September and October (~150 miles) with warmer days leading to cooler mornings, November was a great month to run in North Carolina and enjoy all my races. Continue reading
Life at Red Hat: Red Hat Summit, DevNation in full swing
DevNation and Red Hat Summit are in full swing on June 24, 2015. If you’re a runner like me, the day started off early. Like 6:00 am early. The sun has already been up for quite some time in Boston, which is why the blackout curtains in the hotel are welcome for any hangover-like symptoms you might endure during a conference or a visit to the area in the spring and summer. A Record Breaking 2014 Fall Running Season
The training paid off. Those long runs in October made a huge difference. Despite the up and down weather in central North Carolina, the running season this November turned out to be pretty good. The first race of the season was the City of Oaks half marathon. Hilly and cold. How would I fare? Continue reading
Halloween, Red Hat style, home style
We had an amazing Halloween. Of course, it’s a fun day for the family, but also at work. Halloween is important at Red Hat because of our history. 20 years ago this year, the famous Halloween release of Red Hat Linux was out in the wild. Now, it’s evolved into one of the most trusted, secure, and reliable versions of enterprise-ready Linux.
We have an awesome Halloween party at the office. Starting at 2:00 pm on Friday, Red Hat Associates gathered at the Lincoln Theater for a skit from our Corporate Leadership Team. Continue reading
Race Season Begins in the City of Oaks
A cold blast of winter arrived yesterday, making the morning temperatures for the City of Oaks marathon a bit brisk. The forecast was for the low to be in the mid 30’s. Luckily, race time starting temperatures were in the low 40’s. And the wind was just a little ca-burrrr in a few spots!
I dedicated this race to my friend Thomas Crowder, who we lost a few weeks ago to cancer. Thanks for the inspiration Thomas.
This was my eighth time running the City of Oaks half marathon and my 23rd half marathon overall. Last year, I finished in 1:43:08, and my time goal was to beat that. I wasn’t feeling that elusive 1:40 half marathon time today. Continue reading
Cristobal Lights Up the NC Surf Scene
All my research was complete and the call was made for the morning: Emerald Isle was the spot, fingers crossed. Hurricane Cristobal was sitting off the coast, pumping in swell. I used a combination of MagicSeaWeed and SwellInfo to help me pinpoint a surf location—be sure to check out my post Surfing the open data wave that highlights how open data is used by surf forecasting tools. As a surfer stuck inland, if I’m getting in the car to drive two plus hours, I want to maximize my time. Continue reading
Winter Wonderland in Raleigh: Sledders Unite, Drivings a Fright
A winter storm was looming. Other areas of North Carolina to the east and west of Raleigh already had snow, but only flurries in the capital. Nothing was sticking on Tuesday, but school was released early and we were settled in at the house before 6pm. We don’t venture out in this kind of weather. We enjoyed soup for dinner to keep us warm. And it was delicious—cheddar potato by the way. Wednesday was a different story. And that’s where things get interesting. Continue reading
