Storm a comin’. Seriously, the remnants of a tropical storm were coming through the North East today. And Boston just happened to be a place where the rain bands were squalling all day long. I found a break in the storm to get in a five mile run. Parts of it were during a light mist, and the humidity reminded me of North Carolina. Continue reading

Boston Fun on Father’s Day Weekend: Waterfront
June has been a busy month. I helped with a book launch, CityCamp NC, and now this…
June started off with the launch of The Open Organization, a new book from Red Hat CEO, Jim Whitehurst. My role has changed over the last few months, and while I’m still working on Opensource.com, I’m now leading the effort to build community around the book. This means that we are exploring how leaders lead in an open organization and what makes them successful. Continue reading

Spring Break 2015: From Surf to Snow
Spring Break 2015: Rincon, Puerto Rico Day 5
It was our last day in Puerto Rico for Spring Break. We had a completely different second half planned to go snowboarding and we were off to Denver later in the day. But first, we had to soak in as much sun as possible before heading to the airport. We enjoyed our remaining time on the beaches near our condo. Continue reading

Spring Break 2015: Rincon, Puerto Rico Day 4
Another beautiful day in Rincon was on tap. An early morning surf session with some of the leftover swell was a great way to start the day. Then the family was all geared up for a morning sail on the Katarina and some snorkeling in the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve. This was day four of our Spring Break and our last full day on the island of Puerto Rico. Continue reading
Spring Break 2015: Snorkeling at Tres Palmas Marine Reserve
Explore the reef at the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve in Rincon, Puerto Rico with our GoPro as we take you below the surface. The family went snorkeling with the crew from the Katarina and enjoyed viewing all the sea life that was very active on the reef, some schools of fish swimming in the warm waters, and lots of amazing fan coral. Continue reading
Spring Break 2015: Rincon, Puerto Rico Day 3
It was another good day of surf in Rincon, leftovers from the big swell were still coming in. Spring Break was in full effect and I was up early and in the water before 7:30 am. The rest of the day had more in store for us, including a trip to the Rincon Beer Company. Continue reading
Spring Break 2015: Rincon, Puerto Rico Day 2
It was our first full day in Rincon, Puerto Rico after spending most of Friday traveling. The first order of business after cooking breakfast at the condo was to acquire a surfboard. Little did we know that the surf was cranking, but we’ll get to that in a moment. Continue reading
Spring Break 2015: Rincon, Puerto Rico Day 1
Spring Break was so close we could taste it. Our travels would bring us to the warm waters and surf of the Caribbean in Rincon, Puerto Rico then to the mountain tops of the Rockies for snow boarding and skiing. But we had to get there first. And that meant leaving early from a light rain in Raleigh, NC to a better state of mind. Continue reading
NUTR101x Introduction to Nutrition Essay
I recently completed my first MOOC (Massive open online course) through the EdX platform. The material for the Introduction to Nutrition course was provided by Wageningen University. I learned a lot about nutrition, the three macro-nutrients (proteins, carbs, and fat), and how the body breaks down food. Overall, I had a great experience with the MOOC.
For our final exam, we were asked to critically assess the validity of a food or health claim and to argue in favor or against it. The specific requirements were:Β Continue reading
