The family spent an amazing day at Playa Delfines, a popular locals beach, free from the shadows of the hotels. We soaked up the sun, played in the surf, and had an all-around great beach day.
December 22nd – Play day at Playa Delfines
The cooler was packed and ready to go for a day at the beach. I ventured out to the convenient store to get a bag of ice for the day. We made sandwiches and had cold beverages. It was about a 25-minute drive to a popular white, sandy beach called Playa Delfines.
Parking was theoretically free, but they have attendants that are for “tips only.” I gave the person two US dollars and we made our way to the beach. We settled in under an umbrella shelter providing much needed shade.
The water was amazing, the bluest of blues and some decent surf with an onshore breeze. The red flags were out and there was a pretty stiff current. The lifeguards were busy all day. Zander and I took a short walk down the beach to check out the scene to the south, then we played in the water for a bit. Yep, the lifeguard whistled us! We pretty much stayed waist-deep because of the rougher conditions.
Surf check | I was mind-surfing all day. We saw a few guys paddle out with varying success. The current pulled them south, quickly away from our vantage point.
The beach was fantastic and oh, the people watching, pretty stellar. There was a photographer who had several families for photo sessions. There was a family celebrating their 15-year old daughter’s birthday or at least they had these giant balloons in the shape of a number one and five. Then as this family was wrapping up, another family was coming in for Christmas pictures.
Overall, we had a hassle-free and enjoyable time at the beach. Once the cooler was emptied out and the afternoon started to cloud up, we made our way back to the car. Kissed by the sun and covered in sand, we made our way back to our AirBnB for the evening.
We cooked shrimp and tortellini Alfredo for dinner. Tomorrow is going to be an early and very long day as we have a tour to Chichen Itza with a 7:00 am pick-up time. Staying in and relaxing at our place was a good call, especially after the amazing beach day we had.
