January 23, 2014 β€“ Leadership North Carolina Forum β€“ Introduction to CityCamp NC and Unconferences

I co-presented with Raleigh City Councilor Bonner Gaylor about the CityCamp NC unconference. Part of the presentation at the Leadership NC State of the State involved walking the 40 attendees through a mock pitch and voting session.

February 18, 2014 – NonProfit Connection – Tap into the Power of the Unconference

I gave a 45-minute presentation where I shared my experience from attending and organizing numerous unconference events. I explained what and unconference is, what situations it works in, and how to run an unconference for non-profit organizations or events. The NonProfit Connection is a “Club within the Club” at the Downtown Clubs of Raleigh promoting learning, involvement, and the advancement of community non-profits.  (For club members and guests.)

February 21-23, 2014 – SCaLE 12x (Southern California Linux Expo) – Open Source All The Cities

I gave a 45-minute presentation with an updated version of my Open Source All The Cities talk at the Southern California Linux Expo in Los Angeles, California. There were about 80 attendees in this session and excellent questions, conversations, and sharing of ideas during Q&A.

March 1, 2014 – FOSS Fair 2014 – Open Source vs Open Data

I co-presented with my Opensource.com colleague, Jason Baker, with a new presentation about open source and open data. FOSS Fair is a one day open source unconference primarily attended by NC State students.

March 12, 2014 – DesignBox Lunch & Learn – Open Source, Open Government, Open Data

I gave a lunch presentation at DesignBox about the principles of open source and provided examples of the open government and open data activities and initiatives happening in Raleigh, NC.

April 2-3, 2014 – Great Wide Open – Open Source All The Cities: Transforming Government & Cities with Open Source and Open Source Principles

I gave a 45-minute presentation after an inspiring keynote from Clay Johnson, who talked about taking a more critical look at the open government, open data, and open source movements, to start looking at them for ways to build more sustainable, and more scalable government. My session dovetailed nicely with those topics as I explained the open source and open government movement happening in the Triangle, NC adding in thoughts around what it means to be a Citizen CIO.

April 7-9, 2014 – ApacheCon –Keynote: Open Source All The Cities

I was very excited to deliver a 30-minute keynote address at ApacheCon to almost 500 attendees. I shared my civic hacking experience from Raleigh, NC and highlighted the principles of the open source way to an audience that was probably familiar with many of the ideals, but may not have thought about applying their open source knowledge to another discipline, especially government.

May 15, 2014 – Drupal Business Summit Atlanta – Open Source Beyond Technology

The organizers of the Drupal Business Summit Atlanta attended my talk at Great Wide Open. After my presentation, they asked me if I would keynote at their event. After checking my calendar, I learned that I would already be in Atlanta for the OpenStack Summit and agreed.

I presented on Open Source Beyond Technology to almost 200 people, sharing the core principles of the open source development model and sharing some exciting things happening in the open government and open data space from Raleigh, NC. The presentation was adjusted for an audience new to open source, so the talk had more emphasis on some of the basics around understanding the open source way.

City of Raleigh CIO, Gail Roper, and I presented to a room of more than 50 people describing how the City of Raleigh and passionate citizens can partner to promote the principles of open source in their community and how to change the culture of your IT department to favor open source.

August 27, 2014North Carolina Digital Government Summit, Presentation: Open Data, Crowdsourcing and Mitigating Information Requests

Wearing my Code for Raleigh brigade captain hat, I co-presented with Anil Chawla, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, ArchiveSocial and Reid Serozi fellow brigade captain at Code for Raleigh in a room with more than 75 attentative govies. Our presentation talked about how open data is still evolving, but transparency and open government are clearly here to stay. We talked about trends, standards, policies, and lessons learned. A fun part of this talk was talking about the role that social media plays in citizen engagement.

September 10, 2014 – Innovate Raleigh – Open community culture

I was a moderator for a 120 minute brainstorming session around the idea of Open community culture along with Marc Gracieux and other volunteers during Innovate Raleigh Summit. We had over 70 people creating mind maps around different questions that ultimately led us to determine the main initiatives for this community-driven component of Innovate Raleigh in 2015.

I gave a dynamic presentation about our community building efforts at Red Hat around Opensource.com to a room of more than 200 marketing professionals. My talk took folks behind the scenes to see the nuts-and-bolts, the tools, the metrics, and the strategy behind Opensource.com.

The talk was trending on Twitter for a while!

January 9, 2013 – Triangle Interactive Marketing Association – Futurist panel

I participated in a panel discussion with Zach Clayton, CEO of Three Ships Media, Andy Beal, CEO of Trackur, Mark Rockett, CEO of Rockett Interactive, and moderator Steven Keith, Centerline Digital about online marketing trends and predictions for 2013.

January 24, 2013 – Innovate Raleigh 2013: Building on the Past, Creating the Future – Emcee

I was emcee for this two hour event, responsible for a brief introduction to Innovate Raleigh and introducing the line-up of speakers.

February 9, 2013 – FOSS Fair 2013 – Multiple presentations

I gave three presentations, voted on by participants, at this 1-day open source unconference. Each talk was designed to introduce the principles of open source to students and other attendees. The three 50-minute presentations were: Creating an online community the open source way, 10 ways to get started with open source, and Path to the open source city.

March 19, 2013 – RTP 180 – Presentation: Open Source Beyond Technology

I gave a six-minute presentation about open source and how it’s influencing communities outside of technology. I sprinkle in a little bit about Red Hat, a little bit about opensource.com, then add some personal experiences about the open government movement in Raleigh and some information about my upcoming book.

March 27-28, 2013 – POSSCON (Palmetto Open Source Conference) – Multiple presentations

I co-presented The Open Source Why, with Shawn Briscoe from BlackDuck Software during a special annual meeting of the Columbia Information Technology Council. We talked about how the conversation is changing from why should companies use open source to how should companies get involved and start contributing. I concluded the session with 10 ways to get started with open source.

I also gave a presentation called Raleigh, NC β€” An open source city, to share how open source is influencing the open government movement in Raleigh.

April 11, 2013 – TriLUG – Open Source All The Cities

I gave a talk called β€œOpen source all the cities” (video) at the monthly meeting of the Triangle Linux User Group (TriLUG). The presentation is a look at the open government movement in Raleigh, a preview for my book The Foundation for an Open Source City, and a overview of the different apps and platforms the City of Raleigh has deployed in the Open Raleigh portal.

April 22, 2013 – NC Datajam – Emcee

I was the event emcee for NC Datajam, a kickoff to NC Datapalooza–the nations first regional datapalooza event. In addition to kicking off the event, I also facilitated the design thinking sessions and assisted Nick Sinai, from The White House, in selecting the final teams and ideas.

April 29-30, 2013 – Open Source Business Conference – Open Source All The Cities

I presented my Open Source All The Cities talk at the Open Source Business Conference and had some excellent conversations with attendees after the session.

April 30, 2013 – Open Oakland – Open Source All The Cities

I took the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) from San Francisco to Oakland and attended the Open Oakland Code for America Brigade meet-up. I gave a quick version of my Open Source All The Cities presentation and learned about the activities happening in Oakland, CA.

May 30, 2013 – June 1, 2013 – CityCamp NC / National Day of Civic Hacking – The Path to the Open Source City

As co-chair of CityCamp NC, I was emcee for the conference but also had an opportunity to give a lighting talk. This is a 5-minute story about my book, The foundation for an open source city, presented at CityCamp NC on May 30, 2013. I talk about the inspiration for the book and highlight the open government movement in Raleigh and the robust community we are building around this movement in the Triangle.

September 11, 2013 – Innovate Raleigh – What’s Your Big Idea?

I was a moderator for What’s your big idea? and lead a great group people along with Jennifer Bosser from the Chamber of Commerce over a 90-minute session during Innovate Raleigh Summit. We had over 70 people creating mind maps around six different topics.

September 12, 2013 – PKN Raleigh – The Balance of Creativity: Left Brain vs Right Brain

I gave a six-minute talk, something different than I normally talk about. I blended a mix of creativity and community initiatives to help kickoff SPARKcon during the IDEAspark event. It was a PechaKucha 20×20 talk: 20 slides that auto-rotate every 20 seconds, totalling six minutes. You’ll enjoy this creatively balanced presentation:

September 17, 2013 – RTP 180 Open Source All The Things – 10 Ways to Get Started with Open Source without writing any code

If you are interested in open source but don’t know how to code, I provide 10 practical ways to get started. This presentation is based off of an article I wrote, but wanted to bring it to life during a 5-minute lightning talk at RTP 180.

October 15-17, 2013 – Code for America Summit – City spotlight: Raleigh

I co-presented with City of Raleigh CIO Rail Roper at the Code for America Summit. Our mission was to highlight the open source, open data, and open government initiatives happening in Raleigh. Gail explained the government side while I tackled the citizen side.

October 23-24, 2013 – All Things Open – Open Source All The Cities

I had a great opportunity to present to over 80 people in the Emerging Issues track at All Things Open. I shared the open source, open government, and open data story in Raleigh from both the government and citizen side and had an extensive dialog with attendees.

October 26-27, 2013 – Hack the Stacks – Open Source All The Cities

I gave a brief presentation at the Hack the Stacks hackathon in Burlington, Vermont hosted by the Code for BTV Code for America Brigade event. It’s awesome to share what’s happening in Raleigh and learn about what’s happening in other communities like BTV.

April 26, 2012 – Refresh the Triangle Meetup – Coding for Good: CityCamp Panel

I participated in a panel discussion with CityCamp Raleigh planners and we shared our insights about planning the unconference and other efforts around open government. Additionally, we gave a preview to CityCamp Raleigh 2012.

April 28, 2012 – CityCamp Kansas City – Keynote presentation: How open source is changing citizen engagement

I gave a 30-minute keynote about the open source culture of Raleigh, highlighting efforts such as Triangle Wiki, Walk Your City/Walk Raleigh, and Innovate Raleigh.

May 21-22, 2012 – Open Source Business Conference (OSBC)  –  Presentation: Your city launched an open data portal, now what?

I gave a 45-minute presentation about the open government movement in Raleigh, NC highlighting both citizen and city efforts to create Open Raleigh with a focus on creating an open data portal.

I organized, presented, and hosted a session at Red Hat Summit that featured eight different speakers highlighting how open source can be applied to disciplines such as microgrid energy, pop culture, design, and more. See the entire playlist on YouTube.

October 26, 2012 – CityCamp Colorado – Presentation: Evolving the open source city

I gave a 5-minute lightning talk about the open government movement in Raleigh, NC highlighting the CityCamp Raleigh activities and the recently formed Raleigh Code for America Brigade.

December 12, 2012 β€“ Triangle Creative Commons 10-year celebration

I organized and hosted a session to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Creative Commons. The meetup featured eight different speakers highlighting how Creative Commons is used throughout the Research Triangle community including book publishing, science, education, and game design.


2011

March 10, 2011 – DrupalCon Chicago 2011 – Creating an online community the open source way

I gave a 60-minute presentation about the success of open source and how the principles of sharing, collaboration, transparency, meritocracy, and rapid prototyping are changing the world. This presentation uses opensource.com as a case study to explore the ways the website went from an idea to a growing community and how the different components of Drupal are used to help build online community.

May 3-6, 2011 – Red Hat Summit – Panel moderator: Open source is changing the world

I moderated a panel of open source experts that included Michael Tiemann, Gunnar Hellekson, Ruth Suehle, and Sebastian Dziallas. The panel discussed how open source is applied to business, government, education, and life, respectively.

June 3-5, 2011 – CityCamp Raleigh – Emcee

As s CityCamp Raleigh co-chair, I was emcee for the three day unconference.

June 10-12, 2011 – SouthEast LinuxFest – Creating An Online Community the Open Source Way. (video)

At the DrupalCamp day during SouthEast LinuxFest (SELF), I gave a presentation focused on community building using opensource.com as a case study.

September 5-6, 2011 – NC Digital Government Summit – Citizen-led collaboration [PDF]

I co-presented with Jonathan Minter, Chief Technology Officer, City of Raleigh, on how CityCamp created a culture of collaboration and how the transparency of our team structure lead to accountability.

December 3, 2011 – CityCamp Honolulu – Panel discussion

I participated in a panel discussion with Alissa Black, Government Relations Director at Code for America and Steve Bretches, a consultant at IBM. Our goal was to provide insight about open government movement from what we’re seeing around the rest of North America and beyond.
