I got a good 3.5 mile jog in this morning on the Appalachian State University (ASU) campus to get the day started. Time for the camp to begin.<\/p>\n<p>Finding parking was easy, then you just followed the signs to the registration area. The day kicked off with<!--more--> a welcome message from Toney Carey, Vice Provost Academic Affairs and Chris Wells (<a title=\"Twitter @sceo\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/sceo\" target=\"_blank\">@sceo<\/a>), Redfin Solutions (main sponsor).<\/p>\n<p>The first session I attended was <em>Making Drupal Friendli(er) for content editors<\/em> by Christina Dulude (<a title=\"Twitter @cdulude\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/cdulude\" target=\"_blank\">@cdulude<\/a>) who is a web developer at Duke. She talked about<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>admin module &#8211; http:\/\/drupal.org\/project\/admin<\/li>\n<li>vertical tabs &#8211; http:\/\/drupal.org\/project\/vertical_tabs<\/li>\n<li>pathauto module &#8211; http:\/\/drupal.org\/project\/pathauto<\/li>\n<li>realname module &#8211; http:\/\/drupal.org\/project\/realname<\/li>\n<li>editing in Drupal, ie don&#8217;t want to make users go to the long content listing so you can use View -&gt; Node (edit link) under fields<\/li>\n<li>WYSIWYG<\/li>\n<li>Permissions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Good stuff from Dulude to get the basics of taking a core Drupal install and getting the right modules to create a better user environment.<\/p>\n<p>Next was the keynote session with New Kind&#8217;s Chris Grams. Ruth Suehle (<a title=\"Twitter: @suehle\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/suehle\" target=\"_blank\">@suehle<\/a>) wrote a great <a title=\"recap of the keynote\" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/d1Sb9v\" target=\"_blank\">recap of the keynote<\/a>. I never mind watching <a title=\"Truth Happens\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wjSDAUykkzQ\" target=\"_blank\">Truth Happens<\/a> again, which was shown during the keynote.<\/p>\n<p>Lunch was at the dining hall. Wow, they&#8217;ve come a long way since I was on campus. It was fun to eat with all the Freshman who arrived on campus last week with the start of the Fall semester.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch, I presented an updated version of <em><a title=\"Creating online community the open source way\" href=\"http:\/\/opensource.com\/life\/10\/7\/creating-online-community-open-source-way\" target=\"_blank\">Creating online community the open source way<\/a><\/em>. Lots of good questions and great conversation with the attendees.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the afternoon at Drupal Camp was spent in sessions. First up was <em><a title=\"Planning Drupal Sites\" href=\"http:\/\/planningdrupalsites.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Planning Drupal Sites<\/a> <\/em>with Cindy McCourt (<a title=\"Twitter @cindymcqt\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/cindymcqt\" target=\"_blank\">@cindymcqt<\/a>). She covered all the parts about why, how, who, what, where, when and other tips about deploying a Drupal site.<\/p>\n<p>My final session was also with McCourt, titled <em>The Power of View<\/em>s. There are some very interesting things you can do with views. She covered basic views, how to display nodes in views, other views in views using arguments, and a photo gallery view. Awesome stuff, a little over my head for some parts, and this will definitely needs some practice.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, a great day in Boone learning lots of Drupal things and meeting some great people from the Drupal community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The weather was perfect for the first Drupal Camp in Boone, NC.
