There are a variety of things to see and do, lots of great food to eat, and the beaches are some of the <a title=\"Cape Hatteras ranked as fifth-best U.S. beach\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/triangle\/blog\/2011\/05\/cape-hatteras-ranked-as-fifth-best.html\" target=\"_blank\">best in the US<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s your first time or your twentieth, this post can help get you started to an awesome vacation. You&#8217;ll want to go back again and again. Let&#8217;s get started.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I usually stay in Kill Devil Hills, so this post will focus on KDH as the basecamp, but I&#8217;ll highlight some of the best things to see and do while you&#8217;re on the OBX.<\/p>\n<h3>Things to do on the Outer Banks<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Wright Brothers National Memorial\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/wrbr\/planyourvisit\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Wright Brothers National Memorial<\/a> &#8211; see where first flight happened and get a great view of Kill Devil Hills.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Nags Head Woods\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.org\/ourinitiatives\/regions\/northamerica\/unitedstates\/northcarolina\/placesweprotect\/nags-head-woods-ecological-preserve.xml\" target=\"_blank\">Nags Head Woods<\/a> &#8211; a hidden gem if you want a great nature hike to get away from the sand and the shopping.<\/li>\n<li>\n<div id=\"attachment_443\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-443\" href=\"http:\/\/hibbets.net\/blog\/2011\/06\/06\/2011-guide-to-the-outer-banks\/cape_hatteras\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-443\" class=\"size-full wp-image-443\" title=\"Cape Hatteras lighthouse\" src=\"http:\/\/hibbets.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/cape_hatteras.jpg\" alt=\"Cape Hatteras lighthouse\" width=\"210\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-443\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cape Hatteras lighthouse<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Go to the beach &#8211; enjoy the sun, surf, and sand at any of the beaches in KDH or Nags Head. There are numerous beach accesses if you need them, and the parking is usually plenitful if you get there earlier. You won&#8217;t need the beach accesses if you&#8217;re at a hotel or house rental on the oceanfront or within walking distance. The beach accesses in Kitty Hawk are few and far between and the parking isn&#8217;t that great.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Festival Park in Manteo\" href=\"http:\/\/roanokeisland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Festival Park in Manteo<\/a> &#8211; check out the Elizabeth II and much more.<\/li>\n<li>See the <a title=\"wild horses\" href=\"http:\/\/hibbets.net\/pics\/obx2007.php?category=5\" target=\"_blank\">wild horses<\/a> in Corolla. You&#8217;ll need a 4&#215;4 vehicle and some patience. Drive with caution and go early in the morning for the best chance to see the Spanish Mustangs.<\/li>\n<li>See the lighthouses. The Outer Banks has four lighthouses to visit from Corolla to Cape Hatteras. If you are up for driving and start early enough, you might be able to do them all in one day. I recommend visiting them while you are doing other things around the OBX.\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Currituck Beach Lighthouse\" href=\"http:\/\/www.currituckbeachlight.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a>\n<div id=\"attachment_442\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-442\" href=\"http:\/\/hibbets.net\/blog\/2011\/06\/06\/2011-guide-to-the-outer-banks\/ocracoke\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-442\" class=\"size-full wp-image-442\" title=\"Ocracoke Lighthouse\" src=\"http:\/\/hibbets.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ocracoke.jpg\" alt=\"Ocracoke Lighthouse\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-442\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ocracoke Lighthouse<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Currituck Beach Lighthouse is about an hour to the North from KDH. It&#8217;s a brick lighthouse and there is a fee to climb it.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Bodie Island Lighthouse\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/caha\/planyourvisit\/bodie-island-lighthouse-restoration-project.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Bodie Island Lighthouse<\/a> is a 30 minute drive to the South from KDH, it&#8217;s easy to access and for now, you can&#8217;t climb it. There is a restoration project that has scaffolding around the lighthouse that should be wrapping up soon.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Cape Hatteras Lighthouse\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/caha\/planyourvisit\/climbing-the-cape-hatteras-lighthouse.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Hatteras Lighthouse<\/a> is just over an hour to the South from KDH on Hatteras Island. Probably the most famous icon on the Outer Banks, it&#8217;s the tallest lighthouse on the East Coast and there is a fee to to climb it\u2013and it&#8217;s worth it.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Ocracoke Light Station\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/caha\/historyculture\/ocracoke-island-lighthouse.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Ocracoke Light Station<\/a> is a 90 minute drive and a 45 minute ferry ride. You should plan a day trip to Ocracoke Island. You won&#8217;t be able to climb it and access is limited because it&#8217;s on private property. But while you&#8217;re there, check out all the other things on the island: Howard&#8217;s Pub, Teach&#8217;s Hole (pirate shop), the British Cemetery, pony pasture, the beaches, and much more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Visit the <a title=\"NC Aquariums\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncaquariums.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">NC Aquariums<\/a> on Roanoke Island and newly opened Jeanette&#8217;s Pier.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"http:\/\/www.jockeysridgestatepark.com\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jockeysridgestatepark.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jockey&#8217;s Ridge state park<\/a> (largest sand dune on the east coast).<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Pea Island\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fws.gov\/peaisland\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pea Island<\/a> on Hatteras island, just pull over somewhere and go to the beach, do some fishing, bird watching, or just enjoy the scene.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"OBX pirate adventures\" href=\"http:\/\/www.piratesobx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a>\n<div id=\"attachment_441\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-441\" href=\"http:\/\/hibbets.net\/blog\/2011\/06\/06\/2011-guide-to-the-outer-banks\/obx_pirate_adventures\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-441\" class=\"size-full wp-image-441\" title=\"OBX pirate adventures\" src=\"http:\/\/hibbets.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/obx_pirate_adventures.jpg\" alt=\"OBX pirate adventures\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">OBX pirate adventures<\/p><\/div>\n<p>OBX pirate adventures in Manteo&#8211;the kids will like this, go early.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Chicamacomico lifeguard station\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicamacomico.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chicamacomico lifeguard station<\/a> in Rodanthe, mostly history, not very exciting, but kind of neat.<\/li>\n<li>Watch a <a title=\"sunset\" href=\"http:\/\/hibbets.net\/pics\/obx2010.php?category=8\" target=\"_blank\">sunset<\/a> along the sound somewhere<\/li>\n<li>Jog or walk on the beach road. Be carfeul of the traffic.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the beach at night and look for crabs, seashells, and other fun stuff.
