The 9-1-1 system is overwhelmed with real emergencies during weather events\u00a0like Hurricane Sandy, so if you want to report a downed tree, power outage,\u00a0or clogged storm drain, you need another way to do so\u2014SeeClickFix provides that forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Of all the media surrounding Hurricane Sandy, aka Frankenstorm, one\u00a0email caught my attention. The subject was: “Use\u00a0SeeClickFix to Help Your Community During Hurricane Sandy.” What a great idea. The whole point of SeeClickFix is\u00a0to report non-emergency issues to local authorities in a transparent\u00a0forum so that other citizens can view the reported issues.<\/p>\n

SeeClickFix<\/a> told opensource.com that over 800 issues were reported on the\u00a0East Coast within the last 24 hours (as of 1:00 PM ET on Tuesday,\u00a0October 30). Here’s what else they had to say about how citizens have been using SeeClickFix before, during, and after the storm.<\/p>\n

In communities affected by the storm, having access to crowd-sourced,\u00a0realtime information is critical for the safety of citizens. Before the\u00a0storm, people were using SeeClickFix as a preparatory measure, to draw\u00a0attention to problems that could worsen the pending impact. In\u00a0particular, the most common report was for clogged storm drains, which\u00a0significantly increase the likelihood of flooding. After the storm,\u00a0people are using SeeClickFix to report the precise location of power\u00a0outages, flooding, downed trees, downed electric lines, and other storm\u00a0damage.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Citizens are\u00a0heeding requests from emergenecy management officials to report their non-emergency issues to SeeClickFix. They are\u00a0using the platform to engage with\u00a0neighbors and help those in need by viewing posts for necessities like\u00a0batteries, water, and flashlights.<\/p>\n

SeeClickFix has once again proven itself as an invaluable tool for\u00a0communities during severe weather events. As 9-1-1 call centers all over\u00a0the Northeast were overwhelmed with calls yesterday during the peak\u00a0hours of the hurricane, governments and fire departments were actively\u00a0pleading with residents<\/a> to use that service only in the case of a true\u00a0emergency.<\/p>\n

And these reports can be made from our\u00a0website, mobile website, map widgets on media partner websites, and most\u00a0importantly, via our iPhone and Android apps.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s apparent that SeeClickFix provides an important alternative to 9-1-1 centers and other emergency services. Because issues are posted transparently in the system, neighbors can see what\u2019s\u00a0happening in their local area. Then, they are able to lend a hand or items if they can and report new\u00a0issues they see.<\/p>\n
