Pea Island, North Carolina
Pea Island is a National Wildlife Refuge located on the north end of Hatteras Island. This
natural beauty is a 13 mile stretch of wildlife and home to many indigenous animals and many
surf breaks. This untouched heaven if a surfer's paradise. You can pull off the side of
the road and find a trail that navigates you through the sea oates and over the sand dune.
To get to Pea Island from Nags Head, head south on Highway 12 and go over the Oregon Inlet
bridge. You will notice a difference right away and realize that you are isolated from
the world you know.
The surf is almost always better on Hatteras Island - but you do get burnt
occasionally. Pea Island is usually very sensitive to the wind, so any thing stronger than
5-10 knots will put a surface chop on the face of the wave. The most famous break is S-turns
which is located just outside of Rodanthe to the North. The crowd gathers from New Jersey to
Virginia Beach, but the local rippers rule the peak.
